Baltic Writing Residency
The writer chosen for the Baltic Writing Residency in Sweden receives $1000, and a free stay in a furnished cottage in Stockholm. The residency is open to writers of fiction, creative non-fiction, plays and poetry. Applications close on 15 January.
Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship
The Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship is an annual award that allows professional writers living in Scotland to enjoy a month-long residency at the Hôtel Chevillon International Arts Centre at Grez-sur-Loing in France with a stipend of £1200. Each year, four writers are invited to spend time with other artists and absorb fresh cultural experiences. Applications close 1 February.
Historic Joy Kogawa House
Located in British Columbia, Canada, this residency is available to Canadian writers who have published two books and have previous teaching and public speaking experience. Residency last for three months and successful candidates receive a stipend of $2500 per month. Applications close on 1 February.
Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing
This residency is hosted by Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Named for the University’s renowned literary alumnus and initiated in the fall of 1993, the Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing offers up to four months of unfettered writing time for a writer working on a first or second book. The program provides lodging in Poets’ Cottage and a stipend of US$5000. Applications close on 1 February.
Charles Perkins Centre Writer in Residence Fellowship
This fellowship supports an established Australian writer to create new work within Australia’s leading interdisciplinary centre dedicated to easing the global burden of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions through innovative research and teaching. The fellowship runs for one year and includes a grant of AUD$100,000, an Honorary Appointment at the University of Sydney and a base in the Charles Perkins Centre Research and Education Hub. Applications close 10 February.
American Library in Paris Visiting Fellowship
Founded in 1920, the American Library is Paris is a private, non-profit English-language library. Its fellowship program is open to writers worldwide. Fellows receive a stipend of US$5000 to assist with travel and housing costs. Applications close 14 February.
Can Serrat Residency
This residency near Barcelona is offering one writer a two-month residency including accommodation, workshop space and food. The residency is open to all writers regardless of nationality or age. Applications open on 1 February and close on 1 March.http://canserrat.org/call_writers
Hosking Houses Trust
Located in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Hosking Houses Trust residency program seeks to appoint women over the age of 40 who need time in which to start, continue or complete interesting or innovative work in English dealing with any subject. Private accommodation is provided in Church Cottage and a bursary of up to £1000 per calendar month is provided.
Norton Island Residency
Located in Maine, halfway between Mount Desert National Park and Campobello Island, Norton Island is a remote, rustic wilderness with facilities to accommodate writers and artists. A committee of independent jurors will select 16 writers (from fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction) for inclusion in the program which runs from 6 to 17 July 2017. If accepted, a $125 residency fee is payable, though a small number of scholarships are available. Applications close on 1 March.
Jack Kerouac Writer in Residence Project
The Kerouac Project provides four residencies a year to writers living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three-month stay in Orlando, Florida, in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of US$800 are included. The Project also offers opportunities for residents to participate in readings, workshops and to interact with the central Florida writing community. Applications for the 2017-2018 residencies close on 12 March and results will be announced in May.
Hugo House
Seattle’s Hugo House aims to provide an inspiring and creative place where writers and readers of all levels share an appreciation for well-written words. Its writer-in-residence program offers private writing offices and a monthly stipend for a period of nine months. Applicants should have a specific artistic project they are working on during their residency (e.g., developing a manuscript for publication) and should have a special interest in helping writers become better writers and fostering an appreciation of the craft. Applications close 31 March.
Associates of the Boston Public Library’s Children’s Writer in Residence Fellowship
Boston Public Library was established in 1848 and is the oldest large municipal library in the United States. The Library’s Children’s Writer in Residence Program provides an emerging children’s writer with the financial support and space needed to complete one literary work for children or young adults. The writer in residence receives a $20,000 stipend and a private office in the Central Library. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry and script projects are all eligible. Applicants cannot have published more than three books to date. Applications are expected to open in March.
Shakespeare and Company Bookshop
Shakespeare and Company is an English-language bookshop in the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine, opposite Notre-Dame. Since it was established in 1951, Shakespeare and Company has thrown open its doors to all sorts of writers, artists, and intellectuals who sought refuge. In exchange, Tumbleweeds (as guests came to be called) are asked only to “read a book a day,” help out in the shop for a couple of hours, and write a single-page autobiography for its archives. The bookshop has housed an estimated 30,000 Tumbleweeds.
Martha’s Vineyard Writer’s Residency
The Noepe Center for Literary Arts residency program, established in 2007 as the Martha’s Vineyard Writer’s Residency, aims to provide writers of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and plays a place in which to create or complete new works. Up to ten writers at a time are invited and some scholarships are available.
Norman Mailer Center and Writers Colony
The Norman Mailer Center and Writers Colony offers Summer Fellowships for fiction, nonfiction and poetry writers at the Ucross Foundation located on a 20,000-acre ranch in northeastern Wyoming. Eleven applicants will be chosen and receive full tuition and housing for the entire three-week period of their stay. Applications are expected to close in April.
Gladstone’s Library Writers in Residence
Built in 1902, Gladstone’s Library is the UK’s only residential library. The Library’s Writers in Residence program began in 2011. Four residencies are offered each year with each writer staying at the Library for a month. The Writers in Residence are asked to keep a blog about their stay, as well as running a creative writing workshop. Residents receive full room and board, reimbursement for travel expenses and a small stipend of £100 per week. Applications close on 31 May.
New York Public Library’s Cullman Center Fellowships
The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers is an international fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit from access to the New York Public Library’s collections housed at its main branch on Fifth Avenue. Novelists, playwrights and poets are invited to apply, along with academics and independent researchers. Fellows can be from anywhere in the world. A stipend of up to $70,000 is granted to each fellow, along with an office, a computer and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic resources. Applications for 2017/18 fellowships will open in June.
Hedgebrook Writers in Residence Program
This residency for women writers is located on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles north-west of Seattle. The program is open to all women writers, whether their work has been published yet or not. Applications open in June.
Varuna Writers House
Each year Varuna awards 30 Residential Fellowships including the Second Book and Flagship Fellowships. Varuna Residential Fellowships offer a writer independent writing time, accommodation and full board at Varuna, the Writers House in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. Varuna Fellowships are open to writers of all genres of imaginative writing but applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents. Applications open in June and close at the end of July.
Writers Omi at Ledig House
Since it was founded in 1992 it has hosted hundreds of authors and translators, representing more than fifty countries, including Gary Shteyngart, Kiran Desai and Colum McCann. Ledig House located in Ghent, New York, two and a half hours from New York City and guests may select a residency of one week to two months. Application information for 2018 will be published on 15 August.
Scotland Writing Residency
The Scotland Writing Residency is located in Brora, a coastal village in the east of Sutherland in the Highland area of Scotland. The writer resides, for one week during summer or fall, in a furnished and recently renovated, traditional croft cottage, containing three bedrooms. The residency does not come with a cash prize. Applications close on 25 August.
Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts
Residencies of between two and eight weeks each are offered year round by the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City. Open to writers, visual artists, and music composers worldwide, each resident receives accommodation, studio space, and a $100 per week stipend. Approximately 60 residencies are awarded per year. There are two deadlines each year: 1 March for residencies taking place between July and December, and 1 September for residencies between January and June.
Jentel Artist Residency Program
Jentel is located on a 1000 acre working cattle ranch 20 miles south-east of Sheridan, Wyoming. It offers individuals a supportive environment in which to further their creative development. Applications for Summer/Fall Residencies close in January and applications for Winter/Spring Residencies closes on 15 September.
Denali National Park Artist-in-Residence Program
The Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to exploring new ways for visitors to experience Alaska’s Denali National Park. From hundreds of competitive applications each year, approximately six accomplished writers, artists and composers are invited by the park superintendent to spend ten days in Denali at their own expense the following winter or summer. Visits include a permit for limited access along the Denali Park Road and time alone at a historic ranger patrol cabin. Applications open on 1 May and close on 30 September.
Wallace Stegner House
Located in Eastend, Saskatchewan, the Wallace Stegner House residency program accepts writers for stays from one week to up to eleven months. A rental fee of $250 is payable and includes all utilities. Applications should be submitted by 30 September, and writers and other artists from around the world are invited to apply.
Berton House Writers’ Retreat
Berton House is located in Dawson City, Yukon. Professional Canadian writers who have published at least one book and are established in any creative literary discipline (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, play/screenwriting, journalism) may apply for a three-month residency. Applications are expected to open in September
Ireland Funds Monaco Residential Bursaries
have been established to enable literary and academic writers born or living in Ireland to pursue a current project during a one-month residency at The Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco. Recipients receive flights, accommodation, a weekly subsistence payment and a €1300 honorarium. Applications for September/October 2017 residences close on 30 March. Applications for March/April 2018 residences close at the end of September.
Faber Residency
Faber, the Arts, Sciences and Humanities Residency of Catalonia in Olot, is a place for writers, translators, artists of diverse disciplines, scholars and scientists to stay together and to work on their personal projects. Accommodation, a workspace and some meals are provided but the residency does not cover travel costs.
Wellstone Center in the Redwoods
The Wellstone Center offers four writing fellowships per year, as well as week-long writing residencies and an emerging writers residencies. The Center is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, four miles from the Pacific Ocean. The 2017 application deadlines are 1 February, 1 April, 1 June, 1 August and 1 October.
Vermont Studio Center
is the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States. Each month the Center hosts over 50 writers and artists from across the country and around the world. There are three fellowship application deadlines in 2017; 15 February, 15 June and 1 October.
M Literary Residency
This program, sponsored by the M Restaurant Group, offers a two-month-long residency in bustling Shanghai to a poet, fiction writer, or creative non-fiction writer. The resident receives transportation, housing, food, and a $1000 stipend, and is required to participate in one or two events in the community. Applications are expected to open in October.
Villa Sarkia
Villa Sarkia is run by the Nuoren Voiman Liitto culture association in Sysmä, southern Finland. The residency is primarily designed to give young writers and translators the chance to focus on their work in a private and inspiring setting. Residency periods in Villa Sarkia are between one to three months. Applications for Autumn (1 August to 31 December) close on 31 May; applications for Spring (1 January to 30 June) close on 30 November.
Fine Arts Work Center
This program is only open to emerging writers. It awards seven-month writing fellowships to five poets and five fiction writers each year from October 1 through April 30. Fellows are provided with a private, furnished apartment and a monthly stipend of $750. Fellows are required to remain in residence at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, during the seven-month Fellowship. Applications open on 1 December.
Cove Park Literature Residencies
Cove Park is a Scottish artists’ retreat located on the Rosneath peninsula, an hour’s drive west of Glasgow. Literature residencies take place between March and September and last for between one and three months. Applications are invited from established writers of short and long fiction; poetry; creative non-fiction and memoir; work that crosses these genres and also writers who have made their reputation in one field and wish to develop in another. To be eligible for consideration, writers must have published at least one full-length book in their field. Applications for 2018 residencies will close in December 2017.
